Arrival at the Surgical Center

Please plan to arrive 2 hours before your surgery is scheduled to begin. You will be called the day before to verify an arrival time and time of surgery.

For your safety, the staff may ask you the same question many times. They will ask who you are, what kind of surgery you are having, and on what part of your body the surgeon will be operating.

Here are a few important reminders for the day of your surgery:

  • If you have had anything to eat or drink since midnight other than a sip of water with your medications, tell someone.
  • If you have been instructed by a Nurse, MD, or Physicians Assistant to take medication by mouth the day of surgery, drink only enough water to swallow it.
  • If you have been placed on new medications since pre-admission, provide the medication and dosage to your nurse.
  • If you did not do so during preadmission, please provide a copy of your living will.

You will be admitted by a Registered Nurse who will complete the pre-operative paper work, review teaching, insert an intravenous (IV) catheter, and administer any medications ordered by your physician. The IV is used to deliver medications and fluids during your surgery and recovery.

You will also meet your anesthesiologist before your surgery. He/she will review your health history and the type of anesthesia you will be receiving. Please review any concerns or questions you may have at this time.

One family member can go with you to the pre-operative area and wait with you until you go into the operating room. Make sure that your family member is either available in the waiting room or provides a contact phone number we can call after surgery to inform them about your status.
