The twelve-bed geriatric psychiatry unit treats the mental and emotional needs of older adults.

A team of nursing professionals, physicians, clinicians, and support staff work together to meet the mental health needs of patients over the age of 65. While length of stay can vary according to many factors, the average stay for our patients is usually ten days.

Patients in this unit receive:

  • A comprehensive diagnostic, medical, and psychiatric evaluation by our interdisciplinary team, who then create a treatment plan focused on the individual.
  • Individualized care and psychiatric short-term treatment in a safe and comfortable environment.

Today, people are living longer than ever. With increased longevity comes the need for continued, advanced health care. While there are numerous resources that address the physical challenges that come with age, mental health options for seniors and their families are fewer.

The Geriatric Psychiatry Unit at Roger Williams addresses the mental and emotional needs of older adults. Our dedicated team of nursing professionals, physicians, clinicians, and support staff work closely together to meet the mental health needs of patients over 65.

Seniors admitted to our 12-bed unit are always treated with dignity and respect. Patients receive a comprehensive diagnostic medical and psychiatric evaluation by our interdisciplinary team, who then create a treatment plan focused on the individual. In this safe and comfortable environment, our geriatric patients receive individualized care and psychiatric short-term treatment. While length of stay can vary according to many factors, the average stay for our patients is usually 10 days.

The fact that the Geriatric Psychiatry Unit is located within a general medical hospital makes it unique in Rhode Island. For patients with both medical and mental health issues, this means treatment is available under one roof. While other psychiatric facilities must transport patients to an outside hospital to address medical concerns, ours can be immediately treated on-site.

The Geriatric Psychiatry Unit offers comprehensive psychiatric care and services. The unit was designed with both safety and comfort in mind. Our medical professionals strongly encourage family involvement to ensure patients' needs are addressed from admission through discharge. To ensure care continues after discharge, we offer self-care plans or aftercare plans for patients needing continued at-home care.
