Volunteer Bobbi O'Hara
Throughout history, hospitals have relied heavily on the dedication and hard work of volunteers to strengthen and enhance the organization's ability to provide care and services to the community. Now more than ever, hospitals need volunteer support. If you have knowledge, time and energy to give, please call our Volunteer office at 401-456-2505 for information about the many opportunities we provide.
Collecting stories, one at a time
Everyone has a story to tell. For the elders of Elmhurst Extended Care, a dedicated volunteer is making that happen. Bobbi O'Hara has developed a passion for interviewing Elmhurst residents and their loved ones about their lives. She then turns these interviews into beautiful bound books for the families.
"Her work has touched many lives," said Richard. E. Gamache, Vice President & Administrator of Elmhurst Extended Care. "It means so much to the elders that their stories are put down on paper for their loved ones to cherish."
Bobbi has been volunteering her time at Elmhurst, the nursing home affiliate of Roger Williams Medical Center, for the past two and a half years. For her efforts, Bobbi was recently named Volunteer of the Year by the Rhode Island Health Care Association. "Bobbi's work fits in perfectly with our Philosophy of Care, the Eden Alternative," said Gamache. "She helps promote the legacy of our residents."
Elmhurst Extended Care is the only nursing home in the state home to The Eden Alternative, a new philosophy of elder care that strives to alleviate loneliness, helplessness, and boredom from daily existence as we age. Facilities with this designation have helped change the typical notion of a nursing home by incorporating reminders of daily life, such as plants, animals and children.
